Julius was an electrical engineer for the U.S. Army Signal Corps.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a> He was fired from his job during the Red Scare, a period of time when \u201c[f]ederal employees were analyzed to determine whether they were sufficiently loyal to the government.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a> Allegedly, following Julius\u2019 dismissal, he subsequently asked his brother-in-law David Greenglass, a machinist working on the atomic bomb project, to pass the instructions on how to make a bomb to the Soviet Union.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On July 17, 1950, Julius was arrested for passing the secretive information to Russia, and a month later, on August 11, Ethel was also arrested and charged with assisting her husband with the illicit activities.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a> On March 6, 1951, the Rosenbergs entered Judge Irving R. Kaufman\u2019s courtroom.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a> Both were on trial for selling nuclear secrets to the Russians.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a> Notably, the only evidence against the Rosenbergs was the conflicting stories between Greenglass and Julius, and a \u201cseries of vague sketches that Greenglass presented as being identical to the secrets passed by Julius to the Soviets.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In an article written by Norma Abrams, published in the <em>Daily News<\/em> on March 7, 1951, she observed the couple in court.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a> \u201c[T]he most unconcerned people there appeared to be the Rosenbergs,\u201d Abrams writes, \u201cwho held hands, smiled and murmured comments to each other \u2014 seemingly paying little attention to the formal proceedings.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon the Rosenbergs\u2019 arrest, there were many protests throughout the United States because the public thought the evidence used to convict them was \u201cweak and ethereal.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a> The public felt pity for the Rosenberg couple and their two children.<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trial lasted almost a month, and on April 4, the defendants\u2019 convictions were returned.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a> Greenglass received a 15-year prison sentence for aiding the Rosenbergs.<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a> The Rosenbergs were sentenced to death under the Espionage Act of 1917; they continued to assert their innocence from their prison cells at Sing-Sing,<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a> regardless of the prosecution\u2019s deal to substitute their death sentences in return for an admission of guilt.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a> On June 19, 1953, both were executed by electric chair.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, the American public\u2019s opinion on the Rosenbergs\u2019 innocence was incorrect. \u201c[W]ith the end of the Cold War and the disclosure of Soviet intelligence in the 1990s, new, stronger information confirming the espionage activities of Julius Rosenberg was released (<em>although the role of his wife still remains dubious<\/em>)\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a> \u2014 ultimately affirming the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p><em>If this article was of interest to you, think about attending Mark Yochum\u2019s Continuing Legal Education on Roy Cohn, the attorney who prosecuted the Rosenbergs.
